We are living in the age of web and websites are extremely essential in today’s world. You can open up a world of possibilities with your own website. Web designing takes a wee bit of skill and it takes a little bit of perseverance to lean the tricks of the trade and be engaged in making attractive websites. You can publish your works, your family photos, interact with people, and open up a whole new frontier. In today’s world, people are steadily doing business with the people who are not even in the same location as they are. All this is possible because of the websites. However, in order to start off, you need the right tools and the right setup. The three major tools which are used to create efficient websites are absolutely free to use and the possibility is that you already have them. Of the three tools, two of them come bundled with your operating system. These are the text editor (Note Pad, in case you are using Windows operating systems) and an internet browser (Internet Explorer). The third important tool which you will extensively require is an FTP client.

There are few more things you need to take care properly when you are into web development field. If you want to attract the surfers’ attention, then make your site fast, so that it can be loaded quickly. For that, make sure the coding is correct, and the content is short and compact. Your visitor will not read long things in your website, they want quick information, so provide them what they want, and get the kind of traffic you desire in your site. You can also put some quick links on your site. So that, whenever your visitors click on any links, they can quickly navigate on other pages. Never forget to add a site map on your homepage, so that visitors find it easier to surf your site. Visitors should be able to visit your site through search engines; this will help you to get more and more traffic.

And one of the very important things is the compatibility of your website. That is, your visitors can use any types of browser like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Opera browser. And your site should be compatible with all of them. There are many good and informative sites which failed to make their presence felt online, because of this compatibility problem. Obviously, the more attractive your website is, the more you need to spend for it. And it will be for your own good, because, the look of your website matters a lot. The cost will vary according to the size or your website and different tools you are going to use.

If in case, you are going to start an online business, and for that you are going to design your own e-commerce web site, then make sure, that your website has the ability of taking credit card details, and a few other money transaction options available. For all these, you may need to spend a bit more initially, but you will get immense exposure in the world of internet through these ventures. So, they would definitely be worth the pain and the price. So, trudge along with your newly gained knowledge and create those picture perfect and efficient websites.

Get Extra Speed by Using

David Risley asked:

You’ve done everything you could to your computer box over the years, including keeping it clean, upgrading everything possible (some RAM here, a new DVD drive there, maybe another hard drive and so on) and there’s basically nothing more you can do.

You may have entertained the idea of replacing your computer with a new one because everything is getting so slow it’s intolerable.

However you may not have to do that if you switch over to some apps that are nice and speedy.

Basic maintenance

Before tackling the task of using alternative software, it’s a good idea to “clean up” your computer first. You can do this by using free software called CCleaner, available at www.ccleaner.com. Install it, close all your open apps (except CCleaner), run this and reboot. Most people notice a notable improvement in overall operation after running this registry cleaner application. I suggest running it at least once a week.

Web browsing

Internet Explorer 7 is one of the “heaviest” (if not the heaviest) web browsers out there. Yes, it’s free but it’s also slow. Consider using free alternatives such as Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.com/firefox) or Opera (www.opera.com). Both of these browsers are well known to run circles around IE, performance-wise.

Instant messaging

The worst as far as bloated instant messaging applications go is the Yahoo! Messenger. This application is extremely “heavy” and packed full of things you probably never use. Other from-service IM clients such as Windows Live Messenger and AIM are also in desperate need of losing weight.

You can use alternative IM clients or just your web browser to accomplish the same chat capability.

Try these out:

* Trillian @ www.trillian.cc (the basic version is free)

* Pidgin @ www.pidgin.im

* Miranda @ www.miranda-im.org (one of the lightest you’ll ever use - it even works on Windows 95!)

* Digsby @ www.digsby.com

* Meebo @ www.meebo.com (web-based in-browser only)

* aMSN @ www.amsn-project.net (for Windows Live/MSN connectivity only)

* AIM Lite @ http://x.aim.com/laim (AIM only - produced by AOL but without ads and lightning quick!)

Office Applications

Ever since version “2002″ of Microsoft Office the software has become extremely bloated and slow. However you do have alternatives.

Microsoft Office 2000 - It is the luck of the draw whether you can find this software or not as it is difficult to locate (you can’t purchase it any longer). I was lucky enough to still have a copy from years ago with my valid product key and I use this suite it regularly. Remember, this is a year-2000 version so it was programmed for computers of the time. On present-day PCs this version of Office runs lightning quick and I absolutely love it. In addition, you can also achieve even greater speed if you have Microsoft Office 97. And yes, documents created by MS Office 97 are still considered “standard”, so even if you use software that old, everybody you trade documents with will be able to read them without issue.

OpenOffice @ www.openoffice.org - This is a free suite of office apps that have proven to be stable and work great. While not as speedy as MS Office 2000 it does get the job done, and you can’t beat the price tag.

AbiWord @ www.abiword.com - This is a free word processing application. It’s one of the smallest and fastest out there and works great.

ThinkFree @ www.thinkfree.com - This is a 100% web-based office suite. It looks and performs almost exactly like an installed application. You will be amazed at how good ThinkFree works.

Digital photo editing

The bundled software that came with your digital camera is usually always “heavy” on use and has a tendency to crash more often than not. Here are a few free alternatives:

Picasa @ http://picasa.google.com - Whether or not you choose to use the Picasa web service is entirely up to you, but bear in mind the editing capabilities of the free Picasa application are powerful and moreover easy.

Windows Live Photo Gallery @ http://photogallery.live.com - While not as good as Picasa, this particular app is also free and has the ability to publish photos directly to the Flickr web service that many people use (including myself).

Remember…

Before you toss that old PC out - clean it up and try some alternative lighter software. You might find that your older computer box still has a few years of life left in it after all.

The Unmatched Windows Xp Broadband - Cable Tweaks Guide

Kris Mainieri asked:

Does your connection crawl? I bet it does buddy, just try these few simple tweaks, lets get you fixed today. The following tweaks and modifications are the ones I personally perform to my Cable connection after fresh installing windows.

Note-This Guide works with DSL and Cable Connections!

The first thing I like to do is run over to Control Panel > Network Connections and “right click” Local Area Connection (Your primary connection)

Then I Uncheck:

“Client for Microsoft Networks”

“File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks”

“QoS Packet Scheduler”

Then I like to install LVLLORD’S TCP PATCH…. (Read more info below)

Microsoft Limited TCP connections in SP2 to 10! Regain lost speed by applying lvllord’s patch. Just download the patcher and execute it. It will automatically find the windows directory and ask, if it should increase/decrease. Enter C and change the value to 100, and confirm your changes. After a successful patch, the new TCPIP.SYS will be automatically installed. Restart your computer

After I get my Tcp nicely patched, I move on and Tweak my windows xp registry settings to unleash my cable connection’s real potential. Don’t be worried if I said “I tweak my registry”, You wont have to manually edit it because I use a great free tool called Cablenut!

So you downloaded CableNut? Good! Now you are ready to start getting information to use with the program.

The first value that you will need to calculate is the Maximum Anticipated Latency of your connection. To do this, you will use the trace route command built into Windows XP. Follow these steps to get the latency value to use for your connection Alrighty so now lets find our Maximum Anticipated Latency! To do this, Download a really big file such as the .NET SDK framework at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

While this file is downloading, run over and open up Command Prompt by opening “RUN” and typing in cmd. This brings up a nice big black window. Now you need to run what is called Tracert 5 times in this box and write down the highest number you get with every tracert.

So lets get this straight you need to run tracert 5 times each time to a different site. For example

tracert google.com

When you run it let it finish…can take up to 3mins then copy down the highest number. Do this five times, then DROP THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST VALUE and average the other 3 (add them all up then divide by 3).

6 Tips Website Design

Dome Phanthong asked:

1. Use CSS (cascading attraction sheets). If you follow through not apperceive CSS, ferret out it. CSS allows you to maintenance the formatting of your town (e.g. the color or size of a blonde of text) on a disparate at variance page - a CSS document. Thus, with CSS you can impinge the formatting of a common-element by simply updating one piece of code on one page, rather then updating all the pages of your site. For example, if you want to change the back-ground color of your website, you could just change your one CSS sheet and your entire website’s background color would change. Another great aspect of CSS is that you can use it to set the default properties of HTML tags. This can be used to counter browser compatibility problem - that different browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) use different default settings.

2. Test your website in all browsers. Just now your website displays a singular rubric in one browser, doesn’t cruel it commit an act that disposal in also browser. You should permit that your website displays properly in all of the primary following browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Netscape, and Opera.

3. Use produce inception software and freeware, if you need to plunge into a energizing website. Even if you undergo influential languages (such as JavaScript, PHP, and CGI) absolutely enough to lead your receive software and features, you do not want to do that if you are a beginner. There’s no reason to create your own dynamic scripts (e.g. shopping carts, chat-rooms, etc.), if you can find full-functioning customizable freeware. A great benefit of this method is that the customization options will separate the code that changes your website’s look and feel from the functioning code. If you design the code yourself, you’ll be tempted to mix the look and feel with the functioning aspects. So, if later you want to update the look and feel, you’ll have to dig through the long software scripts. If you’re going to be using freeware or any other code that you didn’t design yourself, you should still be familiar with that language.

4. Don’t benediction for free or tasteless web-hosting. Okay, this isn’t necessarily a start tip. However, hosting is twin to design. Free hosts may emit your website with awkward ads. So, you won’t be adequate to task your region as is. Also, free and cheap hosts often don’t support dynamic websites. Unless you’re website is supposed to be a joke, don’t use a free host.

5. Don’t compose your email superscription on your website. If you have a phone bear or mailing directions that your customers can betterment to discharge you or your business, make public that on your website. Website’s with a phone embrace or mailing directions loom much more reliable and honest than websites without contact information. However, don’t publish your email address, because spammers will use web-crawlers will to pick it up. Instead, design a form on your website that customers can use to send messages or questions without giving your email address.

6. Take it slow. Unfortunately, the own disposal to alter to an brilliant designer is considering experience, but your vim can’t render sloppy pages. Don’t go to generate confused and dynamic websites without the ability. If you try to design a code, but find it hard and the code begins to come out sloppy, don’t hesitate to just throw it out. It’s better to have a simple, sleek, and functional website, than to have a complex, sloppy, dysfunctional website.
